Africa is alive and awake: Ahmadinejad

TEHRAN, Feb. 26 (MNA) – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday said that Africa “is alive and awake,” averring that African people and governments do not permit oppressive powers to plunder their countries again.

Speaking at a large gathering of the people of Mombasa -- the second largest city in Kenya, mostly populated by Muslims -- the president said that African nations can count on the Iranian nation’s support in their endeavor for progress.

Ahmadinejad also referred to the Africans’ popular uprising against repressive colonial powers, saying that Iran and Kenya look on peace, friendship, and security with favor and are devoted to the Holy Prophet of Islam (SA), and his justice.

Describing peace, friendship, and brotherhood along with justice as the messages of the two nations to the world, the president said, “Although the Iran-Kenya nations are living away from each other, their hearts beat for kindness, love, justice and Godliness.”

Putting stress on the importance of justice in making peace and security, he said justice is the eternal necessity and the urgent need of mankind.

“Injustice is the main root of conflicts and discords in the world.”

Ahmadinejad’s two-day trip to Africa began on Tuesday, Feb. 24, with the aim of expanding political and economic ties with three African states of Djibouti, Kenya and the Comoros Islands.

The president was accompanied by a number of ministers and high-ranking officials. He returned home on Thursday.

Slain ex-president's son, new Somali PM

Somalia's new President, Sheikh Sharif Ahmed, has chosen the son of a slain former leader as the country's prime minister.

US-educated Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke will join the unity government, with an official announcement expected later on Friday in Djibouti, a Press TV correspondent reported, citing government sources.

Sharmarke, whose father popular President Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke was assassinated in 1969 during a military coup, has held various United Nations posts.

The government of Sheikh Sharif Ahmed, who succeeded Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed as the new Somali president last month, faces the huge challenge of ending two decades of civil war following the oust of dictator Siyad Barre in 1991.

Rampant insurgency, piracy as well as dismantling health system and flagging economy are among the crises that plague the Horn of Africa country.
