'India, Pakistan, US face same enemy'

Richard Holbrooke, the US envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, calls Pakistan-based militants a common threat to India, the US and Pakistan.

"India, the United States and Pakistan all have a common threat now," Richard Holbrooke told reporters in New Delhi after meeting Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Monday.

"For the first time in 60 years since independence, your country (India) and Pakistan and the United States all face an enemy that poses a direct threat to our leadership, our capitals and our people," Holbrooke said, referring to pro-Taliban Pakistani militants.

The November Mumbai terrorist attacks were also at the center of the talks between Holbrooke and Indian officials. India has claimed that Pakistani-based militants have carried out the attacks that left over 170 people killed.

New Delhi has also reportedly warned the US over military aid to Islamabad, saying it doubts whether Pakistan intends to use them to hunt down insurgents.

The US envoy arrived in Delhi on Sunday on the last leg of a regional tour after visiting Islamabad and Kabul. His tour coincided with Pakistan's admission that part of the Mumbai attacks were planned in Pakistan.

Holbrooke's comments come on the day the Pakistani government has agreed to implement a Taliban-style justice system in the troubled Malakand division which comprises the troubled Swat valley and its adjoining areas.

Chief Minister of Pakistan's North Western Frontier Province (NWFP) Amir Haider Khan Hoti said the government and representatives of the pro-Taliban group, Tehreek-e-Nifaz e Shariat-e-Muhammadi (TNSM), reached the decision on Monday, a Press TV correspondent had reported earlier.
