Bangladesh to charge mutineers with murder
Bangladeshi officials are to level charges against more than 1,000 paramilitary guards, who staged a deadly mutiny that killed 140 officers.
The country's parliament plans to enact a new legislation to pave the way for a quick trial of the mutineers, authorities said Sunday.
On Wednesday, the paramilitary border security force, Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) led by six junior officers revolted - at their headquarters in central Dhaka - against their commanders over pay and working conditions.
"The plaintiff named six of the accused while 1,000 more are unnamed," police spokesman Tariqul Islam said.
The charges accuse the troops of premeditated murder of army officers and their spouses with firearms and explosives, hostage-taking, looting, causing unrest, and torching dead bodies to remove traces.
Bangladeshi people hold candles in remembrance of killed officers on March 1, 2009.
The officers were attending an annual conference at the headquarters of the Bangladesh Rifles force in central Dhaka, when they were taken hostage by the rebels.
The 35-hours mutiny in the capital ended late Thursday, but media reports said the rebellion had spread to other BDR bases across the country.
Figures suggest some 137 officers and around 20 of their wives were massacred during the mutiny. On Sunday rescue workers were still searching for 72 missing officers.
Bangladesh has been observing three days of mourning since Friday.
